ParaGard IUD

Canyon Ridge Legal represents women across the nation who have suffered injuries and serious complications related to the ParaGard IUD. If you or a loved one have experienced complications related to ParaGard, you may be entitled to compensation from ParaGard’s manufacturer Teva Pharmaceutical.

What is a ParaGard IUD?

ParaGard IUD is an intrauterine device (IUD) that was designed to provide long-term birth control for up to 12 years. ParaGard IUD is unique among IUDs as it does not use artificial hormones, but instead uses copper which creates an inflammatory reaction in the uterus acting as a spermicide, helping to prevent fertilization of the egg. ParaGuard is manufactured by Teva Pharmaceuticals and was approved for use by the FDA in 1984. Doctors insert the device through the cervical opening in a process that typically takes only a few minutes during an office visit.

Severe complications linked to ParaGard IUD

Due to defective design, the arms of the T-shaped ParaGard IUD can break off and migrate inside the uterus causing severe damage to organs and internal tissue. Many women have experienced device arm breakage during the removal process which creates medical complications and can result in a second, more invasive and complicated removal procedure. In the most severe cases, a hysterectomy may be required.

Although ParaGard is highly effective at preventing pregnancy, if pregnancy does occur, the patient faces an increased risk of ectopic pregnancy with ParaGard. An ectopic pregnancy has serious complications for both the fetus and the mother and must be treated immediately. Ectopic pregnancy is the leading cause of maternal death in the early stages of pregnancy. The manufacturer of the ParaGard IUD may be liable for failure to warn users of these and other health risks associated with the device.

According to FDA reports ParaGard is linked to complications and injuries including the following:

  • IUD device embedded in the uterus
  • Migration or arm breakage of the device causing perforation and tissue damage
  • Breakage during removal procedure so parts of the device are left behind
  • Inflammation from copper residue
  • Infection
  • Scaring
  • Ectopic pregnancy
  • Complications with sexual activity and reproduction after removal
  • Uterine and organ damage
