Tepezza Hearing loss

Tepezza (teprotumumab), the first FDA-approved treatment for Thyroid Eye Disease (TED), was initially praised for reducing eye inflammation and bulging in moderate-to-severe cases. But new research shows that Tepezza may carry a much higher risk of permanent hearing loss and tinnitus than originally disclosed.

Hearing Damage Linked to Thyroid Eye Disease Treatment

Tepezza® (teprotumumab) was introduced as a breakthrough treatment for Thyroid Eye Disease (TED)—but for many patients, it came at an unexpected cost. Recent studies now show that Tepezza may cause permanent hearing loss and other serious auditory complications, far beyond what was disclosed during clinical trials.

If you or someone you love began experiencing hearing problems after receiving Tepezza infusions, you may be entitled to financial compensation. At Canyon Ridge Legal, we’re here to help you understand your rights and take action.

The Hidden Risk Behind Tepezza

Tepezza works by blocking IGF-1R receptors, which helps reduce inflammation behind the eyes. However, these same receptors are also critical for maintaining healthy hearing. As a result, patients receiving the drug may suffer lasting auditory side effects.

Commonly reported hearing issues include:

  • Permanent or partial hearing loss
  • Tinnitus (ringing in the ears)
  • Ear pressure or fullness
  • Muffled or distorted hearing
  • Sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL)
  • Autophony (hearing your own voice abnormally loudly)
  • Patulous Eustachian tube dysfunction
  • Reduced word comprehension

In many cases, these issues persist long after the treatment ends, leaving patients reliant on hearing aids or struggling with daily communication.

What the Research Shows

Studies show a much higher rate of hearing damage than what was originally reported by the drug manufacturer:

2021 – Endocrine Society Study

>  65% of patients developed hearing problems after Tepezza
    (vs. 10% in trials)

Issues appeared after just 3–4 infusions

>  Symptoms were often long-term or permanent

2022 – American Journal of Ophthalmology Study

>  81.5% of patients experienced new or worsening hearing symptoms

>  Only 45.5% saw improvement after stopping treatment

>  Pre-existing hearing issues increased the risk significantly
